Walker named mayor, Taylor mayor pro tem

June 10, 2005 - Sulphur Springs City Council members named a new mayor and mayor pro tem during its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

Clay Walker was selected as Sulphur Springs mayor for 2005-2006, and Place 4 council member Freddie Taylor was selected as mayor pro tem for the coming year.

Along with a reorganization of the council, the board affirmed appointments to various boards and commissions.

In a unanimous vote, the council agreed to extend the employment of Phyllis Rogers as municipal court judge. Rogers has just completed her first term in the position.

The appointments include:

  • Sulphur Springs-Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation — Joe Crouch and Carl Bryan.
  • Zoning Board of Adjustment — James Hulen, Joel Sheffield and Gary Stokes.
  • Airport Advisory Board — Mark McClendon and David Poskey.
  • Library Board — Connie Johnson.
  • Board of Tourism and Promotion — Bill Glover and Bobby McDonald.
  • Parks and Recreation Commission — Bryan Burney and Kelly Wiser.
  • Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals — Rickey Payne, John Cooper and Winston Sawyer.
  • Planning and Zoning Commission — Gary Spraggins and Craig Roberts.
  • Senior Citizens Activity Board — L.B. Jordan, Larry Booker and Fred Dial.
  • Ark-Tex Council of Governments — Freddie Taylor.

The council also tabled until the next meeting the nomination of Larry Blount as the city’s representative on the Sulphur River Municipal Water District board of Directors.
