Grand jury indicts 33 people

June 10, 2005 - In two sessions in the past two weeks, a Hopkins County grand jury returned at total of 46 criminal indictments charging 33 individuals with felony offenses.

A Sulphur Springs man, Billy Joe Smith, 65, was named in 10 separate multi-count indictments alleging sexual offenses against a child. Each indictment against Smith contained two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of indecency with a child by contact.

Hopkins County District Attorney Martin Braddy said the indictments are for offenses that occurred over a period of three years and involved a family member.

Smith was arrested on the first charge on May 26 and was released the following day after posting bonds totaling $325,000.

Other indictments handed up from the May 24 grand jury session included:

  • Kenneth Wayne Moore Jr. — Possession of marijuana
  • Shawn Anthony Johnson — Possession of marijuana
  • Stephen Dale McGowan — Possession of marijuana
  • Danny Joe Mitchell — Burglary of a building
  • Maxwell Isaac Gregg — Burglary of a building
  • Brandi Marie Higar — Burglary of a building
  • Riley Lewis Howard — Burglary of a building
  • Riley Lewis Howard — Burglary of a building
  • Riley Lewis Howard — Burglary of a building
  • Ivan Dewayne McAnally — Possession of a controlled substance.
  • The same grand jury, after meeting Thursday, June 2, handed up another 19 indictments. Those indictments include:
  • Jacoby L. Jones — Engaging in organized criminal activity
  • Katrinka Monique Elem — Possession of a controlled substance
  • Lecheka Ratishia Galloway — Credit card abuse
  • Joel Allen Schmitke — Possession of marijuana
  • Carlos Dranel Jones — Possession of a controlled substance
  • Shawn Gary Coggins — Possession of marijuana
  • George Thomas Shannon — Possession of marijuana
  • Latasha Nash — Possession of marijuana
  • Kesi Shantel Yancey— Possession of marijuana
  • Roxana Petrache — Possession of marijuana
  • Brian Alan Willis — Possession of a controlled substance
  • Michael Norman Thibodeau — Possession of a controlled substance (two counts)
  • Dustin Dee Walton — Burglary of a habitation
  • Marco Jereal Robinson — Possession of marijuana
  • King Shaun Taylor — Possession of marijuana
  • Dwayne Heywood Douglas — Possession of marijuana
  • Victor Taylor — Possession of marijuana

When someone is indicted by a grand jury, they are merely charged with a crime. An indictment should not be considered as evidence of either guilt or innocence.
