Feb. 16, 2005 -- Officials for Sulphur Springs Independent School District are currently working on two waiver request applications, one of which they approved and another for which public comment is still being sought.
The board gave approval of an application to be submitted to Texas Education Agency asking that the district be allowed to enroll 24 students in one kindergarten section and continue to add one student to each of the other kindergarten classes through the end of the year. The district has had 43 new students enroll in kindergarten since the start of the school year, which precipitated the addition of one additional kindergarten class at the start of school.
Officials cite lack of classroom space and the many adjustments which the kindergarten students would have to make as reasons for requesting the waiver expanding the set 22 students to one teacher class ratio established by the state.
The district is also assembling a committee which will be assigned the task of finding space to accommodate what will be a very large group of first graders. School officials suggest that one solution might be reducing fourth grade sections, which as a group is a smaller class, by one room which could then be designated for first grade during the 2005-2006 school year.
Also, the campus advisory committee submitted a proposed district calendar for 2005-2006 contingent on starting school on Aug. 15. Although that date is one week earlier than the date set by the state, it would align the upcoming calendar with that observed over the past few years.
If the waiver is granted, the first day of school for the 2005-2006 school year would be Aug. 8 for teachers, and Aug. 15 for students. The last day of classes would be May 25 for students and May 26 for teachers. Holidays will include Sept. 5 for Labor Day, Sept. 16 for Fall Festival, Nov. 23-25 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 19-Jan. 2 for Christmas holidays, March 13-17 for spring break, and April 14 and 17 for Easter.
