Feb. 9, 2005 -- Sulphur Springs High School will be well represented at the State Choir Solo and Ensemble contest to be held in Austin in May, with 11 students and an ensemble qualifying for the meet by earning first division ratings on a Class I solo or ensemble piece at the regional contest.

Overall, SSHS had 14 students and two ensembles which competed in the Region IV UIL Solo and Ensemble tryouts at North Lamar. Of those, 12 students earned a Division I, or superior, rating in their category, while three others three earned a Division II or excellent rating.

"They either sang a high or low voice solo, not necessarily designated as soprano, alto, tenor or bass," said SSHS Choral Music department director Jerry Bradley. "These were individual solos (Art Songs) or ensemble pieces that were selected from the UIL Required List. They were not choir pieces."

Individuals who qualified for the state solo and ensemble contest by earning first division ratings performing a Class I solo included Nellie Aguilar, Leslie Horne, Laura McCoy, Jessica Lewis, Christian Person, Randi Ruthart, Jessica Sparks, Sarah Grubbs, James Wheeler, Olivia Watson and Brandon Woolley. Among the superior ranked ensemble which is advancing to the state contest were Laura McCoy, Randi Ruthart and Olivia Watson.

Eboni Rape was also recognized for receiving a first division rating on a class III solo, while Miranda Anglin, Kasey Davis and Tabitha Morris earned Division II or excellent ratings.

Also assisting the singers in their preparations for the contest was Sandra Klein, private vocal instructor.
