Aug. 16, 2005 -- A former Sulphur Springs resident, Alex Aguilar, is in Brook Army Medical Burn Center in San Antonio after a suicide bomber attack in Iraq Friday, according to family member Oscar Aguilar.

“Alex was on patrol when the suicide bomber drove up next to their HumVee, and Alex was on the driver’s side with the windows down,” Oscar Aguilar said. “Alex ran down into a river to put himself out because he was on fire.”

Aguilar was heavily sedated throughout the weekend during transport from Iraq to Texas and underwent surgery upon arrival at the burn center. Some skin grafts were necessary. Family members said the surgeon was very optimistic about his recovery.

Alex grew up in Sulphur Springs and was active playing soccer and other sports. He is the son of Victor Aguilar and Vicki Martin Aguilar.

Aguilar’s father said he cannot have flowers or plants in his hospital room because of the need to minimize any chance of infection, but get well cards would be welcomed by the soldier.

For anyone wanting to send Alex a get-well card, the address is:
