|Parent orientation dates set at Sulphur Springs schools|

Aug. 9, 2005 -- Sulphur Springs Independent School District’s fifth graders will have the opportunity to become acquainted with their new teachers and orient themselves with Douglas Intermediate School on Friday, Aug. 12.
Douglas Principal Tona Sue Hudson encourages all fifth graders to take advantage of this opportunity to find out who their teachers will be and the locations of their classrooms. The school will be open from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Any new fifth grader entering the district should plan to register at Douglas Intermediate School, located at 600 Calvert St., before Friday afternoon, Aug. 12. Parents enrolling their children for the first time will need to being the child’s birth certificate, immunization records and Social Security number in order to register.
Fifth graders will begin the school year by reporting to the school cafeteria by 7:50 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15. A special parent orientation is slated to be held at the school beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, for parents to learn more about the intricacies of their child’s schooling as well as services offered at the school, including daily schedules, attendance/absence policies, the Acacemically Challenging Experiences (ACE) program, special teachers/classes, curriculum content and materials, and many other important pieces of information.

Sulphur Springs Middle School
Parents of children who will be attending Sulphur Springs Middle School are reminded that schedule pickups will be conducted Thursday and Friday, Aug. 11-12, in the school cafeteria.
All eighth graders can pick up their schedules from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
On Friday, seventh graders can begin picking up their schedules at 8:30 a.m. but are asked to pick them up before 11:30 a.m. Then, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, sixth graders will be able to pick up their schedules for the 2005-2006 school year which begins Monday, Aug. 15.
All middle school students should be accompanied by a parent or guardian to fill out paperwork. There will also be athletic equipment pick-up for eighth grade boys, according to SSMS officials. Parents should also keep in mind that Monday, Aug. 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. has been designated as parent orientation night at the school.
Also, the Texas Department of State Health Services will offer immunizations for all school-age children at Sulphur Springs Middle School on Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium
Sulphur Springs High School
Friday has also been designated for students who will be attending Sulphur Springs High School to pick up their schedules and yearbooks, and for freshman orientation. Students picking up schedules must bring a completed AGR (Age, Grade, Registration) form mailed to each student over the summer in order to obtain their schedules, according to secretary Linda Hill.
The first part of Friday has been designated for freshmen and 2005 graduates. Ninth graders should plan to attend freshman orientation from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in SSHS cafeteria. Students who graduated in May can also pick up their annuals between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Friday.
From 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, students entering grades 10-12 will be allowed to pick up their schedules and annuals from the school cafeteria. Students currently enrolled in classes at SSHS can also pick up their yearbooks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.
Parents of high school students will have an opportunity to learn more about their teens’ school during parent orientation, which will be conducted at SSHS from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Parents of Houston Learning Center students should note that parent orientation on that campus will be conducted from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29.
Parents of new elementary students enrolling in first through fourth grades should visit District Director of Elementary Education/Testing Connie Mabe in the Administration Building, 631 Connally St., before Friday, Aug. 12, to enroll in classes and receive a campus assignment.
New elementary students who have already enrolled and been assigned to a campus should report to that campus between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, for registration.
Parents of first graders will have the opportunity to learn more about their student’s schools and classes during parent orientation, which will begin Tuesday, Aug. 30, on each elementary campus. Parent orientation for second graders will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at each school. Parent orientation will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. for third graders and at 7 p.m. for fourth graders, on each campus, according to information provided by Mabe.
All new Sulphur Springs students through kindergarten not already enrolled are encouraged to register at Early Childhood Learning Center. Parent orientation for students at Beginnings Learning Center will be conducted from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the school. Parent orientation for students enrolled at ECLC will be conducted from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the school.
All Sulphur Springs ISD students will begin school Monday, Aug. 15, at the regular time. School supply lists for elementary students are available from local merchants to help parents better equip their children for the new school year.
Early Childhood through fourth grade students should be at school by 8:15 a.m. daily for classes to begin at 8:20 a.m., unless advised otherwise by the child’s teacher. Kindergarten, first and second grade students will be dismissed at 2:35 p.m. each day, and parents should plan for pick-up or make other arrangements accordingly. Third and fourth grade students will be dismissed at 3:20 p.m.
At Douglas, fifth graders will begin classes at 8:05 a.m., thus students should be at school prior to that to allow children ample time to get to their classes. Fifth grade bus students will be dismissed at 3:05 p.m. and non-bus students at 3:20 p.m. The dismissal schedule is staggered to allow for bus transportation arrangments, according to the Sulphur Springs ISD Elementary Handbook.
