Sept. 13, 2004 -- A Cumby man was killed Saturday night after being ejected from his vehicle, which overturned just before 8 p.m. on FM 275 just outside of Cumby.

Ricky Lynn Hulfhouser was said to have been traveling northbound on FM 275 south in a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina just before 8 p.m.

It was believed, based on information attained at the scene, that Hulfhouser was approaching a curve on the left side of the road about eight-tenths of a mile south of Cumby on FM 275 south and apparently went into the curve wrong, causing him to jerk the wheel. He over-corrected, causing the vehicle to overturn and roll off the roadway through a fence, according to an initial accident report prepared by State Trooper Kenneth Adams, the lead investigator of the the incident.

Hulfhouser was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, Department of Public Safety reports state.

Hopkins County Sheriff's Deputy Sean English and Dewayne Evans with Cumby Police assisted DPS officers with traffic control and investigation at the scene. Cumby firefighters also assisted at the accident.

The Saturday wreck was the 14th fatal accident to occur in Hopkins County this year, and the 25th traffic fatality. Last year was less treacherous for travelers, with only 17 killed in 15 wrecks in Hopkins County, according to News-Telegram records.
