January 23, 2004 -- A former Hopkins County constable died early Wednesday morning after being struck by a Nissan Altima on State Highway 19 north near Penny's Cafe.

Floyd Lawson Sr., 84, of Sulphur Springs was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ronny Glossup at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

"Apparently, Mr. Lawson had been dealing with an illness, that's probably what initiated him being outside," said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Brian Worley.

From their investigation, DPS officers determined that Lawson was walking down the road at about 5:40 a.m. The driver of the Altima was unable to see Lawson because it was still "pitch dark" outside.

A passenger in the Altima was taken to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital by ambulance but was later released after being treated for minor injuries and shock.

Floyd Lawson served as a constable in the northern part of the county from the 1960s until 1992.
