January 2, 2004 -- Police arrested a Sulphur Springs man and woman Monday evening for selling alcohol in a dry area after catching a man leaving their East Industrial Drive apartment with alcohol purchased from the pair.

A search of the apartment turned up 116 12-ounce cans of Budweiser beer, 55 12-ounce cans of Busch beer and 10 marijuana cigarettes, the latter of which earned the woman a marijuana charge as well.

While on routine patrol, Sulphur Springs Police Officer Rogelio Reyes Jr. and Reserve Officer Kyle Meeks pulled into the 1531 East Industrial Drive parking lot in an attempt to locate and speak with a suspect on another case. As they pulled in Reyes observed a Hispanic male walking out of the couple's apartment carrying a bulky brown paper bag.

When the man saw officers pulling up he attempted to hide the bag. Upon questioning the man let officers look into the bag where they located two cans of Budweiser and a can of Busch beer, all still cold to the touch. The man admitted to buying the beer in the apartment.

Reyes and Meeks knocked on the apartment door and were told to come in. They then smelled marijuana and saw the 50-year-old resident inside.

The woman at first denied having large amounts of alcohol in the apartment, where she said she and the 52-year-old man live. She initially refused officers' requests to search the apartment, but gave in after an officer told her about their conversation with the man outside

The search turned up large amounts of Budweiser and Busch beer cans in two refrigerators, two 30-can packs of Budweiser in the bedroom closet and 10 rolled marijuana cigarettes in plain view in the bedroom.

The 50-year-old woman was arrested for possession of alcohol in a "dry area with the intent to sell and possession of a marijuana, both misdemeanor charges. After questioning by Meeks. the 52-year-old man was charged with possession of alcohol with the intent to sell.
