SSHS choir has 15 make state

Feb. 27, 2004 -- Sulphur Springs High School will be sending 15 choir members to the State University Interscholastic League Solo and Ensemble event to be held in Austin in May. Overall, 16 students received 1st Division rankings at Saturday's UIL Solo/Ensemble judging at North Lamar High School. That's seven more students than last year to qualify for state and five more receiving first division rankings, according to SSHS Choral Music Director Jerry Bradley.

Students receiving a 1st Division rating on a Class I solo, qualifying them for state, were seniors Jennifer Felix, Kerry Grimes, John Litzler, Monica Lancaster and Devon Monroe. Megan Akins, Lacey Bolton, Sarah Grubbs, Leslie Horne, Jessica Lewis, Laura McCoy, Randi Ruthart, Jessica Sparks, Jamie Winkle and Brandon Woolley also received 1st Division rating. Anja Steurzl, an exchange student from Germany, also received a 1st Division on her Class II solo.

Students receiving the second highest rating given at the event included DaMarcus Johnson, Tyler Beck, Christian Person and Olivia Watson.

The students received vocal coaching and assistance from private vocal teacher Sandra Klein.
