April 1, 2004 -- Sulphur Springs police detectives took a 56-year-old Sulphur Springs man into custody Thursday morning on multiple charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child in connection with incidents that investigators said occurred between 1993 and 1996.
Investigator David Gilmore said he went to the man's residence just after 8 a.m. Thursday to make the arrest.
"He was arrested at his residence on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and was taken to Hopkins County Jail," Gilmore said.
The officer said the charges stem from a series of incidents involving three children who were under 10 years of age at the time the assaults occurred,.
"The victims are still juveniles but are much older now than when these offenses occurred," he said. "All I will say, as far as the ages of these victims when these offenses occurred, is they were very young, very young."
Police reports indicate the children, when they got older, told of being assaulted by a family friend.
"One of the victims made an outcry, and it just kind of snowballed from there," Gilmore said.
Those first reports came to police attention in January. The arrest came after a lengthy investigation.
"We did a thorough investigation on this," Gilmore said. "I believe we have substantial evidence these offenses did occur at a residence in Sulphur Springs."
The alleged assailant is being held in Hopkins County jail and will be arraigned before Justice of the Peace Yvonne King on Friday.
