CUMBY — The No. 18 1A state-ranked Cumby Lady Trojans defeated the No. 23 2A state-ranked Caddo Mills Lady Foxes in a wrapup game played Saturday afternoon.

Cumby came out strong, winning the first two games, 25-15 and 25-16. Caddo Mills took the next two sets 16-25 and 20-25.

According to Cumby Lady Trojan head volleyball coach, the third game looked like a finish for Caddo Mills as they led Cumby 11-5 in the last game, but the Lady Trojans gained their  momentum back and went on an eight-point streak to finish the match 15-11.

Cumby had originally been scheduled to host Alba-Golden but that was changed due to the three-way tie for third in that district.

“It has been a rollercoaster ride this season,” said Jones. “We would win and coast and then have to fight back. I am trying to teach them to take charge early and don't let up-the 'killer instinct' to get it done. They are really starting to mature.”

Lady Trojan Sophomore Courtney Crumpton led in double-figure points with 14 points, three aces, one kill, and one dig along with junior Brittany Seely had 12 points, six assists, and six digs.

Other Cumby point-makers against Caddo Mills were Ashley Anderson with nine points, two kills,  and two digs; Laura Oviedo added eight points, four kills, 18 digs, 1 block; Kailee Sartin with seven points, a single ace and kill, and 10 digs; and Valerie Partridge had five points  and two digs.

Demi Newsom at libero had 11 digs, and Savanah Neal punched in four kills, eight assists, two digs, and three blocks.

“This is a great group of girls. I was so glad to get them back after coaching them in JH. They are getting into a leadership mind set. We are trying to keep everyone healthy. I have been so lucky to have good bench players,” Jones said. “They are all getting stronger.”

The district champion Lady Trojan team has moved their mark to 28-5.  The Lady Trojans will play at Commerce today at 6 p.m. in another warmup game.

“I am ready to be able to set back and enjoy the win,” Jones finished.
