CUMBY — It didn't decide postseason play, yet. The Wolfe City Wolves came over and doused Senior Night celebration at Frazier-Lawrence Field, 35-21.

The Cumby Trojans offense dominated with 410 yards to out gain the Wolves' 219.

It was not until the second quarter that the Trojans were able to make the home side scoreboard light up when senior Daniel “Cancun” Degetau took his foot for a trip on two different field goal attempts. Degetau cleared the first from 31-yards out and missed the 28-yarder, putting the tilt 28-3.

“We just had too many turnovers,” said Cumby Trojan head football coach Ed Perez. “We turned the ball over on our first four possessions.” This combined with too many mistakes to a team that took advantage of them.

“We didn't play well in the first half,” added Perez needing a district win after last week's loss to Quinlan Boles.

After a halftime break to regroup and focus, Cumby sent in Degetau for a 17-yard TD run. Degetau (one catch for 43 yards) summed up a triple digit rushing mark with 14 carries for 132 yards. Senior quarterback Timmy Cook sent one through the airways 21 yards to senior Rodney Hobbs for another score while holding the leash on the Wolves allowing them one final score in the third quarter and for the game.

In the fourth, the Cook-Hobbs connection is repeated on an eight yard scoring reception. Making up the majority of the offensive yardage, Cook (also had 15 carries for 29 yards) was 16 for 27 for 231 yards of passing with two TDs and three interceptions.

Hobbs had five catches for 72 yards and four totes for 11 yards. Teammate senior Michael Morris had three carries for seven yards and with four catches for 23 yards.

Others receiving for the Trojans was Brandon Heer with four receptions for 79 yards and with single catches each was Alx Olker for 12 yards and Jordan Strickland for two yards.

District 14-1A had some unusual results Friday as Dallas Gateway pulled the wool over Celeste in an 18-14 final, and Boles thumped Fruitvale 75-0.

Next week the Trojans will be back on the road for the final district play of the season at Blue Devil Stadium. Dallas Gateway hosts Fruitvale, and Boles at Wolfe City.

With the prediction of sunny skies for the rest of the week, Cumby (5-4, 2-2) will have a chance to dry out in preparation for the Blue Devils (3-6, 1-3). As this Friday will tell the playoff tale. There are many scenarios, but Perez had only one thought in mind.

“We have got to win,” he added.
