SS Games moved to MP

Just think of it as a home game on the road.

Sulphur Springs will be on the road for their final home varsity football game.

The football game originally set for Gerald Prim Stadium has been moved to Sam Parker Field in Mount Pleasant.

The first games to be moved are the three eighth grade contests which will be held vs. Marshall beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday in Mount Pleasant.

The varsity game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Senior Night activities beginning at 7 p.m. Sulphur Springs will be the home team and fans should sit on the press box side of the field. All reserve tickets will be honored, all tickets at the gate are $6.

“I like playing on a grass field too. But we don’t have grass here, we have mud and water,” Sulphur Springs head football coach Greg Owens said. “We feel like this is better for everyone involved for the game to be moved.”

Owens said that if the game had been played at Gerald Prim Stadium neither team would have been able to march due to the wet and muddy conditions.

“Now all the Senior Night activities can be held. The bands can march, this is the best option,” Owens said. “It’s a special night for band, drill team and everyone. They won’t have same feeling of it being a home game. But I think this was the best situation. Mount Pleasant is not that far. We’ve won the last three times we’ve played there.”

Owens admitted it was difficult to give up a home game.

“This is in the best interest of everyone and the competition of the game,” Owens said. “Rain is in the forecast for Thursday and maybe Friday. The field now at Prim is already saturated. It really hasn’t improved since the game here vs. Texas  High.”

Owens said, “This is an extremely important game for us. It has playoff ramifications for us and Marshall. We want the game to be decided by the action on the field, not the mud and all that.”

Marshall rolls into the game 3-1 in district, fresh from a 36-30 upset win over Texas High.

Sulphur Springs is 2-2 in district. The Wildcats won 47-7 in Mount Pleasant in their last outing.
