The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats fell to 1-9 in district play as they were swept at home by Hallsville in 13-4A volleyball action.

Hallsville won by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 over Sulphur Springs.

Hallsville is now 27-7, 8-0 in district.

The visiting Lady Bobcats won despite playing short-handed due to illness and injury with only six players suited up.

Sulphur Springs was led by T’Kea Johnson with six kills and two blocks. Kara Tomlinson had three kills, eight service points and two blocks.

Victora Calhoun and Hannah McCampbell had six service points each. Samantha Scott and Jalie Eppars had three kills each. Maurie Lewis led the team with nine assists.

“We started off strong, we were very competitive for the first 10 points. Then we let up and lost our focus, I don’t know why,” said Lady Cat varsity volleyball coach Brandi Small. “We have trouble keeping our focus. It did not seem like we were getting the digs and some of the other balls we usually get to in this game. Hallsville is good, but we could have played a more consistent game.”

In junior varsity action, Sulphur Springs won 25-20, 13-25, 25-17.

The Lady Cats are 23-8 overall, 7-1 in district.

Toni Cody had 13 service points and four kills. Melinda Escobar had seven service points with two aces; Jessica Horton had 20 assists and six points; Kyri Ivery had five points, one block and four kills; Hailey Hollingsworth had four kills.

“We had a very strong rally after losing Game 2. We played our best game we have played all year,” said JV coach Eric Buck. “Our hitters kept the pressure on the Hallsville defense until they finally wore down. It was a fun game to watch.”

The Sulphur Springs ninth grade lost in three games, 25-18, 19-25, 20-25.

The teams are idle Friday, returning to action Tuesday on the road against Longview Pine Tree.

The final home game is Oct. 27 which is “Senior Night.”
