Rollison, Lewis top Wildcat players; QB, DT favorites with online voters

The voters have spoken during a mySSnews.com website online poll for the greatest player in Sulphur Springs football history.

Tyrik Rollison,  the quarterback for the 2008 squad was the winner with Damione Lewis taking second place.

Rollison had 22 percent of the votes with Lewis getting 14 percent.

Rollison, now a freshman at Auburn University, is obviously very fresh on the minds of Sulphur Springs fans. He led the Wildcats to a 14-2 record and the Class 4A, Division II state title.

While at SSHS, Rollison threw 94 touchdown passes including 53 his senior year.

Rollison also threw for 9,433 yards, with 4,728 coming during the 2008 campaign. He completed 696 of 1,020 passes in his three-year career. He completed .682 percent of his passes. He also set the single game passing record with 476 yards in 2007 against Lindale.

Damione Lewis, Class of 1996, was the No. 2 favorite by voters.

Lewis, an all-state defensive lineman at Sulphur Springs, attended the University of Miami before going beginning his pro career. He currently plays with the Carolina Panthers, he was orginally drafted in 2001 as the 12th overall pick by St. Louis.

The 6-2, 290-pounder continues to be a standout with the Panthers.

In 2008 he was a full-time starter and played in 15 games. He contributed 43 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

While at Miami, Lewis was a first team Big East selection and third team All-American by the Sporting News.

Third place went to Marvin Dial, 1971; fourth, Barry Pryor, 1971 and fifth, Forrest Gregg.

Also getting votes were: Jace Jackson, 2009; Ryan Young, 2009; Jordan Stanley,1982; Jerry Dabbs, 1976; Torio Kelly,1996; Kwaesi Palmer, 1996; Caleb Miller, 1999; Greg Owens, 1986; Que Brittain, 1963; Kennan Clayton, 2005 and Jerry Haney,1963.
