Lions take win at home

COMMERCE — Two late interception returns for touchdowns, the first two field goals of the season and a touchdown run by Marcus Graham led host Texas A&M University-Commerce to a 27-12 win over Northeastern State on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Commerce.

A&M-Commerce (2-4, 2-0 LSC North) outgained the RiverHawks by a 220 to 183 margin in the game that featured 18 punts and six turnovers between the two teams. The Lions are 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 1991.

Northeastern State (1-5, 1-1 LSC North) quarterback Kenny Davis was 9-for-38 for 123 yards and two interceptions in the loss. Josh Lewis led all rushers with 43 yards on 12 carries. Donald Dangerfield led all tacklers with 13 tackles.

A&M-Commerce got on the board on its first possession of the game when they marched four plays and 52 yards that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Marcus Graham for the early 7-0 advantage.

Northeastern State pinned the Lions deep in its own territory on their next possession that led to a safety. Trailing 7-2, NSU cut the deficit to two – 7-5, with a 30-yard field goal by Jared Homer.

The RiverHawks took the lead when Troy Adams picked off an Adam Farkes pass and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown for a 12-7 lead.

After going through the first five games of the season without a field goal, freshman Ahmed Abo-Mahmood made back-to-back field goals to give the Lions a 13-12 advantage with 13:15 left in the game.

Clinging to a one-point lead, junior Cory Whitfield ran back his second interception of the season when he picked off Davis and ran it 25 yards for a touchdown to put A&M-Commerce up 20-12.

The Lions closed out the scoring and ended the chances for a NSU comeback .

The next contest for A&M-Commerce is a homecoming tilt at 2 p.m. against No. 7 Texas A&M-Kingsville. The contest will also be for the Chenault Cup that is awarded to the winner between the Lions and the Javelinas.
