Red Raiders win, snap losing streak

WINNSBORO — That sound   heard around town was a big sigh of relief.

All fans of the Red Raiders can now exhale as they ended a three-game losing streak taking a 32-0 win at Grand Saline.

The Indians were held scoreless by the Red Raiders in the 13-2A opener for both squads.

“We did not play well in the first half. We put the ball on the ground. We did not do much right. We only ahead 2-0 at the half, but we corrected a few things and had a good second half,” Winnsboro head football coach Steve Pinnell said.

Pinnell said, “Our defense played well. Ashton Slaughter had an interception. We also recovered a fumble.”

The Red Raiders scored 30 points in the second half while blanking the Grand Saline squad.

Running back Slaughter  scored on a three-yard run. Quarterback ran for a 50-yard score. Full back Nick Parton and Jordan Massey also added scores. Massey’s came from 50-yards out Pinnell said.

Winnsboro got three of four two point conversion. Parton, Massey and Derrick Warren each had one.

The Red Raiders are 1-3, 1-0 in district. Winnsboro hosts Lone Oak in Friday competition.

“We have some tough games left,” Pinnell said. “I am glad to get the first win. I hope we’re able to carry over the confidence from getting the win. We will be alright as long as we do things the right way.”
