Wildcats take No. 4 state ranking, Lobos fall

The power and depth of District 13-4A continues to leave ripples statewide in football circles.

Sulphur Springs bolted from No. 6  to No. 4 in the state Associated Press Texas High School football play in the Class 4A division.

Sulphur Springs, the defending Class 4A Division II champions, are 4-0 for the year. The Wildcats are coming off a 32-13 road win over Mesquite Poteet at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

Perhaps playing in the metroplex got the Wildcats some added exposure. Sulphur Springs began the season unranked in the AP poll.

Also in 13-4A, Longview the preseason pick to win state coming off a state runner-up season to Lake Travis, tumbled in the rankings.

The Lobos, who had held down the No. 1 slot in the rankings all year, lost to former district rival Lufkin, 28-14.

The Lobos fell from No. 1 to sixth as they now sport a 3-1 record. The Lobos began the year beating 5A power Allen.

In the Harris Rankings, the  teams in District 13-4A get much attention.

In that poll, Longview fell to No. 2 while Sulphur Springs is currently ranked 15th. Other district rankings include: Texas High at No. 21; Marshall, No. 45; Mount Pleasant, No. 82; Hallsville, No. 99 and Pine Tree, No. 160.
