The third week of football season is here with several key games in the area.

The Wildcats won’t be playing in the area or this area code tonight. They  make the long bus ride to play in Wichita Falls.

Sulphur Springs cracked the AP Top 10 rankings for the first time this week.

The No. 10-ranked Sulphur Springs Wildcats are 2-0, after edging Whitehouse in the second game of the year, 36-26. The Wildcats downed a good 3A Paris team, 33-21 in week one. This week No. 34-ranked Wichita Falls Rider Raiders are seven point underdogs playing Sulphur Springs at Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The game is set for the 17,000 seat stadium, which is also used by Midwestern University.

Wichita Falls is 0-1, coming off a 28-0 shutout at the hands of 5A power Cedar Hill.

Meanwhile in Cooper the Bulldogs are  2-0 and playing great defense.

Last week they won 35-8, spanking Whitewright. The Tigers managed just three first downs and 93 total yards. The Bulldogs had 362 total yards. Cooper opened the year winning 16-0 over Honey Grove, holding the Warriors to just 57 total yards. Cooper plays at Mount Vernon this week at 7:30 p.m. Mount Vernon, also 2-0 for the year is picked by 17 points over the Bulldogs.

The Tigers are coming off a 19-8 win over Gladewater. Mount Vernon, like Cooper, has been powered by a staunch defense. It should be an interesting matchup.

Winnsboro is 0-2 for the year. They have a welcome open date after the Red Raiders lost 50-7 in Pittsburg.

The bye week will give head coach Steve Pinnell and his staff a chance to regroup for a Sept. 18 rival game against Mount Vernon.

The Emory Rains Wildcats are 0-2 and not picked to win this week, after falling 76-12 in Tyler against No.1-state ranked Gilmer.

Friday the Wildcats are 47-point underdogs when they trek to White Oak (2-0) to take on Roughnecks. White Oak is coming off a win over rival Spring Hill, 23-20.
