After going 2-0 in the first two games of the year, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats have cracked the Class 4A Associated Press state football rankings.

“It’s nice to be thought of and get ranked; to be recognized for playing well, but we know it doesn’t win us any games,” Sulphur Springs head football coach Greg Owens said. “If anything being ranked makes the bull’s eye on our backs get bigger and brighter.”

“It’s a statewide honor,” Owens said. “It’s good recognition for the program and the players.”

The Wildcats began the year unranked, despite going 14-2 in 2008 and winning the Class 4A Division II football title.

The win was the first team state championship in the history of Sulphur Springs. The championship game, a 69-49 win over Dayton, was also a record-setting game which was held in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

So far in 2009, Sulphur Springs is 2-0 with wins at home and on the road.

In the opening game, Sulphur Springs defeated Paris 33-21 on the road. Paris, a defending district champion, is seen as team which will make moves in the Class 3A polls and could repeat as title winners.

Friday at home, the Sulphur Springs teams found themselves underdogs at home to Whitehouse.

The Wildcats from Whitehouse had a lead late, but Sulphur Springs scored two touchdowns late to win 36-26.

This week Sulphur Springs goes back on the road to play Wichita Falls Rider.

The Wildcats took a 22-16 home win over Rider last year in a game broadcast on ESPN2.
