SB Lady Bears split recent volleyball games

SULPHUR BLUFF — The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears hosted Boles for Tuesday volleyball action. The Lady Bears lost the match but won two games.

The results are: Game 1 final  22-25, Game 2 final 25-22, Game 3 final 25-21, Game four final 22-25, game five final 11-15.

Attacks for Sulphur Bluff came by Ashley Bryant with 13, Karissa Wolf had seven, Brittany Andrews with four and Kaitlyn Hancock had one.

Leading in serves was Lady Bear Brittany Andrews with an even dozen, Ginger Thompson had 11, Bryant with seven, Jamie Goldsmith and Hancock each with six, and Wolf had three.

Mikayla Potts put in 18 digs. She was followed by teammate Jamie Goldsmith with nine, Bryant had seven digs, Haley Lawson with five, and Becca Naylor and Thompson each two.

Hancock and Wolf each had five blocks, Andrews made three, Bryant had one. Lawson and Naylor each had five assists.

The Lady Bears JV won their match up with Boles securing wins in all three games holding their undefeated record 5-0. Results were: 25-26, 25-15 and 15-12.

Katlyn Brown led the attacks with five and five digs for Sulphur Bluff. Heather Anderson and Kaitlyn Hancock each had four attacks, Hancock had five digs. Virginia Rodreguez had eight serves. Brown and Stephanie Hogue each had five serves. Teammate Quince Duncan had two serves.

Rodreguez had two digs, Anderson and Duncan each had a single digs. Katlyn Brown received a hustle point.

"The varsity girls played well last night, very proud of them. Our girls did not serve as well this game, but when we got points we earned them," said Sulphur Bluff head volleyball coach Dee Ann Evans. "This was the first time this year we have taken a team to five games."

District play begins Sept. 18, Sulphur Bluff travels to  Dodd City starting at 4:30 p.m.

Sulphur Bluff's results from the Cumby tournament are as follows. Against Como-Pickton Lady Eagles the Lady Bears lost game one with a 19-25 finish, Sulphur Bluff came back to win by two in game two, 26-24 and game three 15-7, and lost in game four 25-27 in tournament pool play.

The Lady Bears lost two games to North Hopkins, 25-27 and 15-25. Sulphur Bluff was downed by Lone Oak 13-25 and 11-25.

Throughout the three matches: Ashley Bryant had 23 attacks, Karissa Wolf had six, Brittany Andrews had three and Ginger Thompson, Fatima Tallez, Haley Lawson, each had one attack.

Leading the serving for the Lady Bears was Jamie Goldsmith with 19, followed by Ashley Bryant with 12, Karissa Wolf with 11. Serving in single-digits was Thompson with six, Lawson with five, Andrews with four and Potts with one.

Digs were made by Bryant and Potts-11, Goldsmith-seven, Lawson-five, Ginger and Naylor each with four. Blocks came from Wolf had seven, Bryant and Thompson each with six, Lawson (led with 11 assists) had four, Andrews with two, and Tallez with one.

Coach Evans said, "The varsity girls played well in the Cumby tournament in their pool play."

The Sulphur Bluff Junior High team won over Harts Bluff. Those results are in match one: Game 1, 12-25, Game 2, 25-17, Game 3, 25-12; in match two: Game 1, 26-24, Game 2, 25-17.

"This was first real game for the junior high girls. I have two teams that both consist of strong eighth and seventh graders. I put together two strong teams that work well together so that both teams can have success," said Evans.
