A strong defense paced the way for Mount Vernon as they went to 2-0 for the year with a 19-8 win over Gladewater.

It was the second consecutive week the Tigers posted a road win. “We played well, especially on defense in the second half,” said Mount Vernon head coach Charles Swann. “We also did well on special teams, we had 13 points from that part of our game. We emphasize special  teams and it paid off.’

Mount Vernon took an early 3-0 lead following a Anibal Hernandez 35-yard field goal. Colby Keener returned a kickoff 80 yards for another score as the Tigers went up 10-0. Hernandez added another field goal. Both teams scored again and Mount Vernon took the win by the 19-8 final.

Swann said Zane Lecase and Kasey Bogue had 16 tackles each. Lecase had two sacks while Bogue had a fumble caused, a fumble recovery and a sack.

“We’re playing good defense and scoring enough points to win. We’re happy to be having a home game after two tough ones on the road,” Swann said. “Cooper is a good team and this is another game which will prepare us for district. We’re in in a very tough district (16-3A).”
