TYLER – The Gilmer Buckeyes made a strong case about why they should be ranked number 1 in the state in class 3A. Beginning with the opening kickoff and continuing through the final whistle, Gilmer dominated with a 76-12 win over the Rains Wildcats on Thursday night at Earl Campbell Field at Trinity Mother Francis Rose Stadium in Tyler.

The Wildcats began the game on a positive note, taking the football on their own 20-yard line and driving into Buckeye territory. But the drive lasted nine plays before the Cats had to punt.

Gilmer quickly moved the football to the Rains 28-yard line where they faced fourth-and-4. Darian Godfry found Luke Turner in the open and completed a 28-yard touchdown pass that gave Gilmer an early lead.

Gilmer took little time increasing their lead on their next two possessions. Godfry led the Buckeyes into the end zone with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Tristan Holt then Vance Green scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to stretch Gilmer's lead to 21-0. Both scoring drives took just two plays to reach their objective.

When Rains seemed to find a spark on an apparent 58-yard run by freshman Dustin Fry that would have had Rains inside the Gilmer 20-yard line, a penalty for hitting a defenseless player wiped out the run and Rains was later forced to punt the football.

Holt took the resulting punt, broke into the clear and raced 69 yards for another touchdown and a 28-0 Gilmer lead to end the first quarter.

Gilmer added touchdowns on a 21-yard interception return, a 3-yard touchdown pass and a 33-yard touchdown pass for a 48-0 lead at the end of the first half.

It took the amount of time for Holt to run from his own 10-yard line to the Rains end zone for Gilmer to continue the route. Holt received the opening kickoff of the second half at the Gilmer 10-yard line then paused to let his blockers engage with the Rains coverage team. Once into the opening, he out ran the remaining defenders for the score.

Godfry concluded his night with his third two-play scoring drive of the night. He began with a 6-yard toss then followed with a 59-yard, catch-and-run touchdown pass to Braylan Webb.

Godfry finished the night completing 14-of-17 passesfor 307 yards and four touchdowns.

Rains quarterback Trevor Vandeventer led the Rains offense on their first scoring drive of the season late in the third quarter. Vandeventer carried six out of the eight-play drive and scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Vandeventer directed another scoring drive late in the fourth quarter. With Rains moving the football mostly on the ground, Vandeventer completed a 25-yard pass to Caleb Coates to move the Wildcats into scoring position. Then three plays later he completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Nick Hancock.

Vandeventer finished the night leading the Rains offense with 67 yards rushing on 27 carries, and 120 yards passing.

Friday night, September 11, Rains will travel to White Oak to take on the White Oak Roughnecks.
