Lady Cats swept by Rains

EMORY — Rains Lady Cats swept three game over Sulphur Springs 25-21, 25-11, 25-19 in non-district varsity volleyball competition played here Tuesday.

Sulphur Springs took the lead in the first game of the match. They had leads of 2-0, 5-2, 7-4 and 12-10. Rains came back to tie the game 12-12 on an ace by Torie Talkington. She added two more aces to give Rains a 14-12 advantage.

Rains held leads of 17-13 and 21-16 before Sulphur Springs pulled to within 22-21, then Rains closed with the final 3 points.

In Game 2 -Sulphur Springs took the early lead in the second game. With the game tied 2-2, the officials had a lengthy discussion then changed Sulphur Springs rotation. After that, Rains took control of the second game with a 10-2 run.

In Game 3-Rains took the early lead in game three. But after trailing 2-5, Sulphur Springs rallied to tie the game at 7-7, 9-9 and 10-10. Then led by a pair of aces from Lewis and a kill by Scott, Sulphur Springs took a 13-10 lead.

Sulphur Springs held a 15-13 advantage when Rains scored the next 6 points to take a 19-15 lead. Sulphur Springs got as close as 19-21 before Rains closed with the final four points.

Top players for the Lady Cats were: Jalie Eppars, 3 kills; Kara Tomlinson, 4 kills, 1 block; Victoria Calhoun, 2 aces; Maurie Lewis, 8 assists, 3 aces; T’Kea Johnson, 3 kills, 1 block; Samantha Scott, 7 kills.

Leading for Rains: Torie Talkington,7 kills, 2 blocks, 4 aces;

Chelsee Hudson, 6 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace;  Mackenzi Barker, 4 kills, 2 assists; Chelsea Virgil, 4 kills, 1 dig and Marlee Canada,1 kill, 10 assists.
