Area teams in big grid games

It’s just the second week of football, but it is not to early to call games coming up as key contests.

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats are 1-0, but not getting respect statewide for a team coming off a Class 4A title. They only moved from up from 40 to 39 in the rankings after beating a good 3A Paris team, 33-21. This week No. 25 Whitehouse is a four-point favorite playing Sulphur Springs at Gerald Prim Stadium Friday at 7:30 p.m. Whitehouse is 0-1, coming off a tough 41-34 loss to Garland Nameen Forest.

Rains, 0-1 for the year, will be in a spotlight game against No. 1 Class 3A Gilmer at the Trinity Mother Frances Classic in Tyler.

The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Gilmer, 1-0, is coming off a win over Jasper. TheWildcats are coming off a 42-0 loss to Mount Vernon.

No pick line is listed for the game.

Cumby, 0-1 after a loss to Como-Pickton, is favored by seven points as they host Union Hill at 2 p.m. Saturday. Prior to the game will be the Frazier-Lawrence Field dedication.

Other games this week include the regular Friday night slate of contests.

Como-Pickton, 1-0 on the year, plays at Ore City. The Eagles are 20-point underdogs in the game slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Cooper, coming off an impressive 16-0 win over Honey Grove, gets a home game this week. The Bulldogs are 35-point pick over Whitewright. The two teams collide at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

Mount Vernon, also 1-0 for the year, will play at Gladewater. The Tigers are a two-point favorite over the Bears.

Winnsboro opened the season with a tough 15-7 road loss to Farmersville.

This week the Red Raiders make the short trek to Pittsburg. The Pirates are a 20-point pick over Winnsboro in the 7:30 p.m. Friday game.
