Cooper defense super; ’Dogs win opener, 16-0

HONEY GROVE — The defense for Cooper was simply overhelming.

The Bulldogs were on the prowl, holding the Warriors to 57 total yards as Cooper took a 16-0 victory.

Seven Bulldogs had at least four tackles with Cooper throwing Honey Grove for losses on nine plays.

Top tacklers for Cooper were: Jacob Vaughn, Tommy Walker, six each; Logan Arthur, Eli Mauldin, five apiece; Holden Jenkins, William Tubbs and Chris Ballard four each.

Honey Grove’s 57 yards came on the ground as Cooper held them to just two yards a carry.

Wyzer Moore scored the only touchdown of the first quarter when he ran over from 5-yards out, capping a 95-yard possession. Dan Beeler booted the extra point.

The next points for Cooper came when Honey Grove snapped the ball over the punter’s head.

Up 9-0 the Cooper team padded the lead with another Moore score. Moore raced in from 5-yards. Beeler again made the extra point to make the final 16-0.

Cooper had 328 total yards with 314 rushing and 14 passing.

Montrel Roberts was the top rusher with 18 carries for 105 yards; Pee Wee Jeffery, 12 for 17; Arthur, five for 23; Chris Ballard, 4 for 15; Ty Huie, five for 74; Moore, 7 for 25; James West, one carry for two yards.

Huie completed 3-of-13 passes for 14 yards with one intercepion. Arthur caught one for five; Walker and Jonathan McGraw, one for four.

“We played well on defense, we have things to work on offensively,” said head coach Ronnie Green.

Cooper, 1-0, hosts Whitewright (0-1) for their home opener.
