EMORY – Things couldn't have gone better for the Mount Vernon Tigers to start their season. The Tigers recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and played all of the first quarter on the opponent's end of the field enroute to a 43-0 win over the Rains Wildcats on Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.

Rains managed to hold Mount Vernon out of the end zone on their first two possessions; however, the third time was the charm for Mount Vernon as Kellan Carrell plowed his way into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to put the Tigers on the board.

Before the clock could tick of the final seconds of the first quarter, Carrell forced his way into the end zone on another 1-yard run. Anibel Hernandez added his second point-after kick of the night to make the score 14-0.

Things started looking up for Rains with the change of the quarter. Rains quarterback Trevor Vandeventer completed a 32-yard pass to Nick Hancock to move into Mount Vernon territory. Then a Vandeventer pass to Kyle Cowdan, combined with a Mount Vernon penalty, moved the football down to the Mount Vernon 8-yard line. However, the Mount Vernon defense held for four plays and the Tigers took possession on their own 5-yard line.

Rains managed to put together another drive deep into Mount Vernon territory, but came away empty handed when Zac Rolf intercepted Vandeventer's deflected passed at the Mount Vernon 13-yard line.

Carrell put Mount Vernon on the fast track to the end zone with a 31-yard completion to Ryan Irvin followed by a 57-yard touchdown pass to Landon Price to extend Mount Vernon's lead to 20-0 at the half.

The second half was all Mount Vernon.

On the Tigers' first possession of the half, Carrell completed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Colten Keener. Later in the quarter, Carrell threw from his own end zone and completed a pass to Keener running deep across the middle of the field which resulted in a 94-yard touchdown and made the score 34-0.

Carrell's finished the night completing 13-of-30 pass attempts for 353 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Keener was his leading receiver with five catches for 181 yards.

Mount Vernon's lead increased to 36-0 when the snap of an attempted punt sailed over the punter's head and went out of the end zone for a safety.

Reserve quarterback Hayden Fox put the finishing touches on the Tigers' night with a 33-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Hernandez made his fifth straight point-after kick making final score 43-0.

On Thursday night, the Wildcats travel to Tyler to take on the Gilmer Buckeyes (ranked No. 1 in the state by Texas Football). Friday night the Tigers travel to Gladewater to take on the Gladewater Bears.
