Sulphur Springs, Terrell meet in scrimmage tonight

It’s the last chance to iron out the kinks before it counts.

Sulphur Springs head football coach Greg Owens admits the Wildcats still needs refinement, but there’s time before the Aug. 28 opener in Paris.

The Wildcats have a home scrimmage today against Terrell at Gerald Prim Stadium. The junior varsity/ninth grade begin at 5 p.m. The varsity will follow at 7 p.m.

The first scrimmage of the year, held against Henderson last week, showed both good and bad plays from Sulphur Springs.

On one hand, the Wildcats had a rampaging defense which was delivering some serious hits to Lion players. But the defense had a hard time maintaining their intensity for the entire scrimmage.

“We’ve got to control our emotions. Our defense is very good and aggressive and we have play that way,” Owens said. “We need to be able to get that emotion back.’

Defensive coordinator Matt Young said he was glad to see the contributions of all the players. He said more than 30 players saw action either in starting or support roles.

The Sulphur Springs offense made several key mistakes against Henderson. The interceptions, fumbles and penalties negated several big gains and possible touchdowns.

“We have to cut back on the turnovers, we can put the ball on the ground and win games,” Owens said. “I think this is something we can definitely fix.”

Owens continued, “Colton Lee made some good throws at quarterback. He needs to work on his accuracy, but his limited on varsity experience. Our offense works better in game situations.”

NOTE- No admission will be charged today. Last week $610 was raised at the gate for Texas High School Coaches Association charities.
