Before you start adding up kills, assists and points, or even wins and losses, you have to know the team.

That’s the situation new Sulphur Springs head volleyball coach Brandi Small is facing.

“All positions are open and  our lineup is not set,” Small said. “We’re still looking to pick our team.”

Small said players who were in the lineup last year may get playing time, or they could be replaced by others. The make-up of the team is wide open depending on the players who step up in practice and upcoming scrimmage competition.

The Lady Cats scrimmage at Commerce on Friday and Saturday play in scrimmage action in Wills Point which will also include Mabank and Terrell.

“The play in the scrimmages will help me determine who can play, who can be on the team,” Small said. “We have been working hard in practice, but how we play in the games and scrimmages is different. We have high expectations and we are going to push the players on these teams.”

Starting positions are open not only on the varsity, but the junior varsity and two freshmen teams. A total of 41 players have shown up for practices which stressed physical conditioning, team play and fundamentals.

Small said she had already had a meeting with parents and was encouraged by the turnout.

“We had a meeting with parents and I think it was a big success,” Small said. “We talked with all the parents there and it was a good meeting.”

Small said she would love to see good crowds at upcoming home games, starting with the season opener Tuesday, a dual match with North Lamar and Prairiland beginning at 5 p.m.

Starters last year returning are Maurie Lewis, senior setter and Kara Tomlinson, junior. T’Kea Johnson, junior, also saw playing time last year. Players coming up from the junior varsity include: seniors Colette McDuff and Justine Hatley.

The lineup has been limited due to several injuries according to assistant coach Eric Buck. Buck said sophomore setter Jessica Horton is out with ankle injury and several players were missing due to hip flexor injuries. Two players are still involved in summer softball action.
