COMO – The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles are setting up house for the first scrimmage of the 2009 season. C-P head volleyball coach Francis Mowat is making a fresh start with a new double net system that was installed Wednesday.

“We have lots of good chemistry with these girls,” Mowat said. “I expect we will be a lot better and stronger. Our goal for this year is to get into the playoffs.”

Volleyball practices began bright and early Monday morning in the air-conditioned gym. “Our routine hours are basically the same football,” she said relieved for the cooler, indoor temperatures, “From 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. 27 girls have turned out for volleyball practice, just about the same numbers as last year.”

The C-P Lady Eagles will host alternating scrimmages against Yantis and Fruitvale this Friday starting at 10 a.m. for the JV and varsity teams. The Lady Eagles will follow those by a Saturday four team scrimmage at Commerce starting at 11 a.m.

Admission to scrimmages is free. Regular season ticket prices will be $2 per student and $3 per adult for JV and varsity games. Junior high game tickets will be $2 per student and $1 per adult.

“The girls are working hard,” said Mowat on the start of practice. The Lady Eagles will have Kadi Baxter as a setter this year, Violet Perez and Marbellis Rasgado on the back row, Megan McCoy, Saxe Daugherty and Makayla Williams as hitters, senior setter is Skye Brumley, and returning will be Jessica Hendricks, Manon Schakel and Bre Peoples.

“I expect Quitman and Caddo Mills to be really tough competitors,” coached added after being dealt a rough time in 2008 district contest. Last season, the Lady Eagles were not able to achieve a district win. Others in

the district include: Winnsboro, Alba-Golden, Lone Oak, and Grand Saline.
