THSCA inducts coaches into Hall of Fame; honors others

AUSTIN — Awards and recognition was given to coaches and other persons during the recent Texas High School Coaches Association meeting.

THSCA 2009 Hall of Honor Inductees were: Luther Booker, Leo Brittain, Ronnie Gage, Ron Poe and Neal Quillin.

Coach Poe, a graduate of Quitman, won state in 1979 at McKinney and was a state finalist in 1986. His teams were in the playoffs 13 times and won 11 district crowns.

Quillin is a graduate of Jacksonville High School and Stephen F. Austin State University.

Quillin won the football state championship at Sugar Land Willowridge in 1982.

THSCA 2009 President-Elect Nominees: Ray Seals, Houston Madison; Jim Rackley, Converse Judson; Rene Medrano, Brownsville Pace.

THSCA 2009 Award Winners: Putt Powell Sportswriter of the Year: Bob Wright, Mexia Daily News; Curly Hays Officials Award: Robert Young, Longview Chapter.

2009 Trainer of the Year Award: Lee Reynolds, Longview HS.

2009 Distinguished Service Awards: DeLoss Dodds, University of Texas Athletic Director    Dr. Bill Farney, Past Director of the U.I.L., Retired

Area football coaches honored for taking teams to state football titles were: Greg Owens, Sulphur Springs, Class 4A, Divison II; Scott Surratt of Carthage, 3A, Division II and Barry Bowman of Daingerfield, 2A Division II.
