Small was at the recent volleyball camp held at SSHS by Paris Junior College instructors. She wanted a chance to look over the talent she will have coming to the floor during the upcoming volleyball season.
Small, a graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce, is eager to start coaching and being in charge of her own program. She has served as an assistant coach at Princeton and Cleveland. This will be her third coaching stop and the first time to serve as a head volleyball coach.
“I’m excited and ready,” said the Teague High School graduate. “I have great expectations, but they are not far-fetched.”
Small played college volleyball in 2006 at Texas A&M-Commerce. At Teague High School, she was on the varsity as a freshman in basketball and track, started as an outside hitter in volleyball as sophomore and also was a varsity cheerleader.
She already knows one district foe having gone against Pine Tree coach Levin Barker when he coached at Mexia while she was at Teague.
“I know and respect him as a coach,” Small said. “It’s a privilege to be coaching in the same district.”
Small continued, “I will stress team work and the fundamentals. You can’t do anything if you don’t know the fundamentals.”
Small will also be a track assistant and teach physical education.
She will conduct a freshman volleyball camp Monday through Thursday, 1-4 p.m. on the same days will hold a camp for grades 4-8, 9 a.m. to noon at the SSHS gym.
