Hopkins County Belles lose in title game at Liberty

LIBERTY — The Hopkins County Belles All-Stars lost 7-6 to Liberty in the championship game of the Dixie Softball tournament held recently in Liberty.

“The game was plagued with controversy and questionable calls to say the least,” said Belles head coach Monty Tipps. “Our kids never gave up despite having the deck stacked against them.”

The Belles started off slow against Blossom in the first game. But the bats going rolling with hits from Courtney Salinas, Mariah Kendricks and Abby Tipps as they took a 13-6 victory.

The second game was played in the heat of midway with the Belles winning 13-5 over Diboll. The strong pitching of Kasey Moore, Marissa Kelty and Salinas and Kaylee Anderson along with base running of Hanna Schulz and Courtney Dunlap sparked the win.

The third game was an impressive 15-2 win by the Belles over the District 1 All-Stars. Lauren Humphries, Toni Cody, Morgan Shearer and Anderson had key hits.

The Belles took on Liberty with Kendricks belting a two-run homer over the fence in a 5-3 loss.

The Belles beat Dayton 7-6 to advance to the title game.

The Hopkins County team lost 7-6 in the final game. Katie Sapaugh had a big hit along with Anderson and Kelty. Liberty won to advance to the Dixie World Series.
