Cumby offers first ever track camp

Cumby will offer for the first time a track and field camp beginning Thursday and continuing through Sunday. Cumby head track coach Gary Parrish is coordinating the event in hopes of making it an annual tradition.

Incoming fifth-ninth graders are welcome to attend. The cost of camp is $30.  All campers will receive a camp T-shirt and four meals. The Trojan Track and Field Camp will be held on the track at Commerce High School as Cumby ISD does not currently have a track at the campus.

Registration will be held at the track on Thursday July 9 from 5-6 p.m., during this time the registration form is to be turned in and payment for the camp arranged.

Guest instructor for the camp will be SFA pole vaulter Ashley Dickeson. Dickeson won the 2006 LSU invitational with a height of 12-feet.

Trojan coaching staff that will assisting in this week's camp include: Coach Parrish in hurdles/sprinters/relays, Coach Johnson as administrator/sprinter coach, Coach Perez as administrator/throwers coach, Coach Jones in jumping, Coach Raymond in distance running, Coach Warren and Coach Madden in throwing.

Coach Parrish's mission is simple. "To provide first class instruction to track athletes of all levels in a fun environment. Technical skills will be taught by the Cumby Trojan coaching staff, select Trojan athletes, and expert

guest instructors. We want athletes to leave the camp with sound, fundamental knowledge about their events and a passion for track and field," stated Parrish.

Camp Information: Cumby is not responsible for transportation of campers, so please drop off and pickup your athlete. Each camper should wear a white T-shirt if possible due to the fact it is much cooler, shorts,proper athletic shoes and socks. Sunscreen is recommended.  Athletes will be trained in flexibility, plyometrics, and conditioning along with specific event techniques.

Event areas instructed include sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws.

5-6 p.m. Registration

6-6:15 p.m. Camp Orientation/Introduction to Staff

6:15-9 p.m. Training Session No. 1 (Athletes are allowed

to work in various event groups or concentrate on their specialty)

Friday, July 10

8:30-9 a.m. Drop off/Breakfast

9-12 p.m. Training Session No. 2

12-12:30 p.m. Lunch

12:30 p.m. Pick up

Saturday, July 11

8:30-9  a.m. Drop off/Breakfast

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Training Session No. 3

12-12:30 p.m. Lunch

12:30 p.m. Pick up

Sunday July 12

6-9 p.m. Mini Track Meet
