Playing short-handed against a team as talented team like Gilmer is not a recipe for success.

The Wildcats took on the fleet and athletic Buckeyes in 7-on-7 action Thursday at the Sulphur Springs football practice fields with mixed results.

In varsity A team play- the Buckeyes took a 19-7 win and also scored a 27-13 decision. Sulphur Springs’ varsity B squad tied Gilmer at 19-all and won 21-19. In junior varsity play - Sulphur Springs lost by scores of 21-14 and 35-7. The Wildcat freshman team won 28-14 and were nipped 14-13 in the second game.

“We played okay but we were not as competitive as I had hoped we would be,” said Sulphur Springs head coach Greg Owens.

The varsity team was missing quarterback Colton Lee. Lee is out with a foot injury which forced safety/receiver Bryant (Day Day) Jackson into the quarterback position for the varsity A squad.

Owens said, “We had a player (Jackson) calling plays and trying to make reads and is not used to being in that position. Our defense played okay, but we gave us some plays we should not have. But Gilmer is competitive and very athletic. It was a good tune-up for us.”

Owens said the Wildcats will face similar competition Saturday in the tournament at Tyler.
