Sulphur Springs athletes still hungry for competition will have more chances in upcoming weeks.

Between Lineman Challenges and 7-on-7 competition, the next six weeks will be busy for high school players. Some locations have both competitions.

Registration is between 7:30 -8:30 a.m. Saturday for the Lineman Challenge in Gilmer.

“We are leaving here at 7 a.m.” said Sulphur Springs coach Charlie Coker as he explained the event. “These challenges are competitions where linemen compete against each other.  Linemen were feeling left out since all the ‘skill’ kids get to do 7-on-7.  I'm not sure where it originated but it hasn't been around very long.  You can read all about it and the events at www.texaslinemanchallenge.com.  We try to get most of our lineman involved.”

Coker continued, “The first lineman challenge we are going to is in Gilmer. They do their own "lineman challenge".  From what I understand, all of their events are individual.  We plan on taking several 9-11 graders to compete. They will have four events: bench for reps, hang clean for reps, obstacle course, and QB sack drill.”

The next lineman challenge is next Saturday, May 30 in Garland at Lakeview Centennial High.  The Sulphur Springs 7-on-7 teams will be competing at the same place again. The Garland challenge is a state qualifier, which goes by the rules stated and the events listed in the above website.  It is going to be at the football field.  “Last year’s 7-on-7 didn't finish until around 5 or 6 p.m,” Coker said. “We were still playing because we kept winning.  I'm curious to see how far we are going to make it in the tournament this year.”

Attending the lineman challenge are: Mason Y'Barbo, Beau Carpenter, Alex Peek, Kedrick Dial, Demarcus Reeves, Tre Hill, Chad Evans, Tyler Halerumal, J.B. Beachem, Dylan Owsley, Jake Dolan, Ethan Boatman, Jordan Baxley, Brad Peek, Jaylon Perry, Hunter Reppond, Reese Harred and K.J. Taylor.

The 7-on-7 games Saturday at Gilmer are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Sulphur Springs taking four teams.

The 7-on-7 continues May 30 at Garland Lakeview Centennial and June 20 at Tyler Lee SQT, no times yet.

SS assistant coach Jeff Riordan said, “We will also have scrimmages set. Thursdays in June we will also have scrimmages set up with Paris/Gilmer/Commerce.”
