BIRTHRIGHT — The North Hopkins Lady Panthers are in unchartered waters.
They won 3-1 over Ivanhoe Sam Rayburn Tuesday night thrusting them in the regional softball semifinals for the first time in school history officials said.
The Lady Panthers meet Valley Mills in a best-of-three Class 1A regional semifinal playoff series at Ennis High School.
Game 1 is today at 7 p.m. with Game 2 at noon Saturday and Game 3, if needed to follow at the same location.
“We really go into this game with Valley Mills without much of a scouting report. They have seen us play, but we don’t have much on them,” said North Hopkins head softball coach Jim Westbrook.
Westbrook said he could start pitcher Chastin Smiddy or even use Smiddy and shortstop/pitcher Jessica Harry on the mound.
“Chastin is more precise with her pitches,” Westbrook said. “Harry has pitches which have more movement.. I don’t know, we could use both.”
Limited reports indicate that Valley Mills is a team which has all right-handed batters, one solid pitcher and good defense especially from the shortstop and catcher.
“They take full swings from what I can tell,” Westbrook said. “They aren’t slap hitters. I’d like to know what to expect and I really don’t.  We’ll line up and adjust to them on the field.”
