PRINCETON—The skies might have finally been clear, but Saltillo did not see a ray of light until the third inning in Wednesday night’s area playoff competition against District 9-A champion Lindsay Lady Knights.

“We just made too many mental errors,” explained Saltillo Lady Lion head softball coach Mimi Kempenaar. “It took us too long to get started. I am very proud of my girls for what they have accomplished this year.”

Saltillo’s Candace Prather rounded the bases for the only run scored in the 12-1 loss to Lindsay. Pitching for Saltillo was sophomore Kirsten McLane. McLane pitched five innings striking out two, allowing 11 runs and six hits and walking three.

Winning pitcher was Taylor Atkins for Lindsay. Atkins faced 21 batters, allowing one hit, striking out seven, and walking one. Lindsay improved their record to 22-7-2, making school history for a team that has only been playing softball for the past four years.

The Lady Knights’ bats were hot in the first inning as they plated seven runs. It was overthrown balls that led to the downfall of the Saltillo team. On several occasions, passes missed their mark at third and first base.

Lindsay played an errorless game as the bats came alive again with four more runs chalked onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Knights, coached by Robin Hess, finished with 10 hits, 7 RBIs, and 5 stolen bases. Lady Knight Taylor Atkins swatted an in the park homerun which scored teammates Kayla Hess and Lucinda Krahl. It was followed by Beverly Knabe’s drive for a hard shot homerun over the left field fence.

“They are a good team,” said Kempenaar. “This is one round farther than we went last year with our season ending in the bi-district round. I will be returning most of my team.” Disappointed the season ended, Kempenaar was looking forward some rest before the birth of her child due on July 4. According to Coach Kempenaar, the District 12-A Runner up Saltillo Lady Lions ended the season on a 10-8 mark.
