Neither rain, nor wind or even the threat of the swine flu can keep the Sulphur Springs track athletes from competing in regional.

The region event was on, then cancelled, now back on again.

Three Sulphur Springs athletes, Ross Hicks, Bryant (Day Day) Jackson and Shane McQueen will compete Tuesday and Wednesday at the Region II meet to be held at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Jackson will participate in the triple jump at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and the long jump at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. McQueen will be in the 300-meter hurdle preliminary heats at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday and if he makes the finals, he will compete at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday. Hicks runs in the 3,200-meter final at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The athletes all earned slots in regional due to performances in district.

McQueen was second in the 300-meter hurdles at the district meet with a time of 39.33;  Jackson jumped 21-1 in the long jump for third and had a leap of 34-7 1/4 for third in the triple jump. Ross Hicks came in fourth in the district meet with a time of 10:25.45 in the 3,200-meter run. Hicks was given a berth in regional when third place finisher, Juan Ramirez of Mount Pleasant with a time of 10:21.06 dropped out.

Jeff Riordan, head boys track coach, has been working with the athletes along with assistant coaches Andy Holt, Triston Abron, Derek Smith.

“Hicks has a best time of 10:15, he will have to run in the low 9’s to advance to state. He has already lowered his time and looks good to break the 10-minute barrier,” Riordan said. “Shane has one of the top times in the area, he also has his time coming down. He has been doing extra work, because he also has been involved with the baseball team. Day Day qualified last year  to regional in five events. This year he is doing the long and triple jump, he’s been putting in the work to improve.”
