CUMBY — The Cumby Trojans defeated the Roxton Lions 14-8 in a district battle. The win kept Cumby near the top of the district standings.
Cumby and North Hopkins are tied for second in district 17-A, one game behind Wolfe City. Cumby (11-7, 8-2) plays at Wolfe City today at 4:30 p.m.
In the Friday win, Trojan Donnie Rodriguez came in to relieve starter Stetson Speights in the top of the second inning with the bases loaded and the Trojans behind 5-1.
Rodriguez retired the Lions' top hitter to end the threat, and continued to thwart the Roxton hitters before giving way to Tanner Gomez who closed the door on the Lions in the seventh inning to preserve the win. Rodriguez (2-1) allowed three hits and hit a batter in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Gomez allowed one hit and struck out two in the top of the seventh inning.
Tim Cook led the Trojan's 19 hit attack, hitting for the cycle in going 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs. His day also included a two-run home run in the sixth inning to seal the deal for the Trojans. Rodriguez, Gomez and Jason Wallace all had three hits for Cumby. Ryan Vaughan, Taylor Gay and C.J. Ringinberg also had two hits each for the Trojans.
