ROBSON — The combination of regional nerves and high wind produced scoring higher than expected for the Sulphur Springs golf team at Class 4A Region II play Wednesday.
“The 330 total for us is higher than we would like, but we have another round today,” said coach Ross Funk.
Individual scores are Cort Walker, 78; Cameron Wilks, 78; Kason Childress, 84; Adam Perry, 90 and Chance Byrd, 95.
The team in first is Highland Park with a 288 score. Another District 13-4A squad Texas High, turned in a 314 score, for seventh.
“We want to do better today,” Funk said. “We opened Wednesday with a pretty good first round, 14 over par. We did not finish well, we ended up 42 over par.”
The Wildhorse Golf Course is a par-72 location featuring 6,725 yards and usually lots of wind.
“The greens got firmer and faster as we played yesterday,” Funk said. “We realistically don’t have a shot at state. We want to play well and try to catch Texas High. If we shoot that score, that would mean each guy has to cut four strokes off the score they had the first day. That’s a challenge, that’s what we are working toward today on the course.’
