E-mail Print PDF

The State Board of Education took the first steps to equalize graduation credits for high school athletes on Thursday, March 26. The board passed out of committee "Option 2" of the five options that were presented by the Texas Education Association staff for consideration of increasing allowable graduation credits for athletics.

"Option 2" would expand the number of allowable state physical education credits to four. To view an implementation timeline, go to the News-Telegram website at mySSnews.com and browse the From the Press box blogs.

This is the third time that the SBOE has taken this credit issue for athletes under consideration and each time it was floored awaiting more investigation into the details. The board met for a two day meeting on March 25-26.

This passed option is a step towards putting athletes on equal footing with regards to state credits for electives as other extra curricular classes already receive more credit counts.
