SS freshmen beat Saltillo, 10-2

The trip into non-district play was not a pleasant journey for the Saltillo Lady Lions.
The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats freshman team took a 10-2 win over the visiting Saltillo team in non-district play Monday at the the SSHS softball diamond.
Saltillo came into the game tied with North Hopkins at 2-0 for first place in district play. That did not carry over into play Monday.
The Sulphur Springs scored 10 runs on 11 hits to take the 10-2 win over the visitors.
Katie Dougan was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cats.
For Dougan, she had a big game at the plate and inside the pitcher’s circle for Sulphur Springs. She had an inside-the-park home run, a single and a sacrifice bunt. Pitching, she allowed two runs off three hits and two walks in six innings pitched. Melissa Kelty pitched the final inning for Sulphur springs allowing two hits, one walk and no runs.
Kirsten McLane was the losing pitcher for Saltillo as the team fell to 5-4 for the year. McLane gave up 11 hits, 10 runs, walked three and struck out five in seven innings of work.
Top hitters for Sulphur Springs were Bridget Bowen with two singles and one RBI; Alex McGahee had two doubles; Katie Stewart, Courtney Dunlap, each plated a run with a hit; Kaitlyn Petty, Morgan Merrill and Alex Darden also had singles.
Dougan retired the Lady Lions in order to start the game.
Sulphur Springs did not wait long to score, pushing across a run in the bottom of the first.
With two outs, McGahee doubled past the third baseman. She took third on a passed ball and scored on an errant throw to give the Lady Cats a quick 1-0 lead.
Dougan kept the Lady Lions at bay while the Lady Cats planned another uprising.
In the bottom of the third,  the Lady Cats struck for two runs. Chelsea Meadows was hit by a pitch in the foot and awarded first base. Dougan moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. Stewart singled home the second run of the  game. Stewart stole second base. McGahee grounded to the shortstop, the errant throw to first allowed the run to score and Sulphur Springs was up 3-0. Saltillo worked out of the jam without any more runs scoring.
The Lady Lions put their bats to good use in the top of the fourth when they struck for their only two runs of the game.
Brooke Lane smashed a one-out single off the second baseman’s glove. Emily White was hit by a pitch and the visitors had runners at first and second. Saltillo pulled off a double steal, to get two runners in scoring position. Kimber Thompson walked to load the sacks. Reagan Martin singled to right field for two RBI.
Dougan got out of the frame, limiting the damage to just two runs.
Sulphur Springs broke open the 3-2 ballgame with a six-run fifth inning. Nine batters went to the dish with six scoring for the Lady Cats.
Dougan began the rally with an inside-the-park homer. The slicing shot placed perfectly over the head of the right fielder into the outfield corner. Stewart followed with a walk and McGahee doubled to left field. Dunlap singled home a run. Darden reached on a bunt hit to load the bases. Bowen drew a walk, forcing in a run. Two more runs scored off throwing mistakes by Saltillo. Merrill grounded out, but a run score to make it 9-2. Sulphur Springs lined into a double play to quell the uprising.
The Lady Cats added another run in the  bottom of the seventh. Dougan singled, advanced to third a wild throw. She scored on a wild pitch to make the final a 10-2 win for Sulphur Springs. The SS freshmen ended their season with a 9-2-1 mark.
Saltillo continues in district play with a showdown coming up Friday at home against North Hopkins at 5 p.m.
