It’s go time.
After long bus rides to tournaments, dust-filled practices and hitting drills held in near freezing conditions, it’s time for district.
The District 13-4A softball race opens today with Sulphur Springs taking to the road facing Marshall.
The teams in the softball race all have accumulated winning records from non-district play, which does not surprise SS head softball coach David Carrillo.
“The records the teams have does not matter now. What matters is what happens the next few weeks,” Carrillo said. “I am very confident that we are ready for district play. I have challenged our girls to turn it up a notch and I have no doubt they will respond.”
Sulphur Springs, a playoff team last year, enters district play with a 13-6 mark.
The Lady Cats are hitting .368 as a team having scored 147 runs in 19 games.
Top hitter on the team is third baseman Mac Morgan with a .491 average with 12 RBI, three doubles, two triples, one homer. She also has stolen eight bases in nine attempts.
Kara Tomlinson is tops on the team with 20 RBI she also has a .431 average with 22 hits, and leads the team with three homers. Maurie Lewis is hitting .480 and posts a .720 slugging percentage. The catcher who has battled illness, has 16 RBI in eight games and three doubles.
Opponents are hitting .257 and have scored 70 runs.
Kaci Kennedy has an 8-1 pitching record with a 1.84 earned run average in 10 games pitched striking out 49 in 38 innings. Taylor Clifton is 5-4 with a 3.16 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 38 innings. The team ERA is 2.83 for the Lady Cats.
“We have had some nagging injuries but everyone should be ready for  tonight,” Carrillo said. “I have added some depth to our lineup. I will have players ready to play. We are fortunate to have an experienced team. I don’t think we could have overcome the adversity we’ve faced if it were not for that experience.”
