Trojans clinch third in Celeste tournament
CELESTE - The Cumby Trojans defeated the Detroit Eagles 17-1 to capture third place in the Celeste Blue Devil baseball tournament on Saturday.
The Trojans defeated Leonard JV 20-3 on Thursday, lost to North Hopkins 5-2 on Friday, and played Detroit for third Saturday.
Sophomore southpaw Stetson Speights notched his first high school career win against Detroit, throwing a complete game, scattering three hits, walking only one and striking out seven in a games shortened to five innings due to run rule.
At the plate, the Trojans had 17 hits, lead-off hitter Tim Cook was three for four with two doubles and two RBI also scoring three times. Devin Owen was two for three with two triples and two RBIs. Designated hitter C.J. Ringenberg was also three for four with a triple.
"Every hitter for the Trojans had at least one hit. Stetson really set the tone on the mound, he was very composed and got ahead in the count, and kept the ball over the plate," said Cumby Trojan head baseball Scott Mabe. "His command of his curveball improved as the game progressed, he was not afraid to throw it anytime in the count. Everyone swung the bat well, I think we are gaining some confidence at the plate."
Cumby (3-5) begins district play at home Tuesday against Miller Grove at 4:30.
