The chilly playing conditions just made the loss seem worse as the Lady Cats boarded a cold, dark bus for the long ride home. Coaches and players pondering what might have been.
Sulphur Springs had a 7-3 lead at one point and we up 10-3 in the sixth with Forney coming off the deck for five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to claim the win. The Wildcats did enough to win the game at the plate, it appeared early, scoring 10 times off 19 hits.
“We had a game like this last year against Forney. We had them early and they came back to win the game,” SS head girls softball coach David Carrillo said scratching his head. “You hate to see these kind, when you have a lead, slip away.”
Kaci Kennedy was the starting pitcher for Sulphur Springs. She allowed five hits in three innings, three runs, two of those earned and struckout three, walking two while facing 15 batters. Clifton pitched 3.2 innings, facing 23 batters, allowing nine hits, eight runs, two earned runs, striking out six and walking two.
Sulphur Springs scored one run in each of the first three innings and appeared to headed toward a win up 3-0.
The Lady Jackrabbits rallied for seven runs in the final two frames to take the 11-10 win.
Krista McMahan had a double, single and three runs batted in. Kara Tomlinson also plated three runs with two hits. Brittani Crawford went 2-for-4 with one RBI; Kennedy slapped a solo home run; Mac Morgan was 3-for-5, with two runs scored; Katie Dodd was 3-for-5 while JaMonica Hall, Jaylee Eppars and Clifton added one hit each.
The loss dropped the Lady Cats to 11-3 on the season.
The Sulphur Springs varsity will compete in the Frisco tournament Thursday through Saturday.
They open the event Thursday at 6 p.m. against Mesquite Poteet on the Frisco Liberty field.
