The Sulphur Springs junior varsity baseball team took a 19-9 win Tuesday at Forney in their first game of the year.
After suffering through wet conditions that hampered scrimmages, the Wildcats finally got to play a game. They were greeted by a brisk wind blowing over the baseball complex in Forney, but it was good to get on the field and play SS junior varsity coach Kurt McCain said. “We made some errors, we have to work on that, but the good news is our hitting,” McCain said. “We hit the ball well tonight.”
Jared Riley sparked Sulphur Springs with four runs batted in from three singles; Lane Anderson had a single and a three-run homer to go with a double; Kade Wimberly had two doubles and plated three runs; Colt Midgley also had a two-run double; Jose Martinez had three hits, knocking in two; Tanner Gilbreath had a single, double and two RBI; Cody Carns had three walks, an knocked in a run with a single.
Carns pitched the first four innings with relief help from Martinez for two frames and Dallin Sant finished the game on the hill with one inning of work.The trio combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed seven hits.
Sulphur Springs scored 19 times off 19 hits and five Forney errors, drawing nine walks.
The Jackrabbits got nine runs off seven hits and four errors by the Wildcats.
The losing pitcher for Forney was Adam Heasley who pitched two innings, allowing three runs. He was replaced by Jon Ponder.
Forney struck for a lone run in the first inning.
Sulphur Springs responded with three runs in each of the second and third innings.
In the second inning, Martinez belted a triple to left field scoring two runs. Anderson singled home the third run of the frame.
In the third, Riley knocked in a run with a single to center field. Then with the bases loaded Wimberly reached on an infield error with two runs scoring to make it a 6-1 game.
Action moved to the top of the fifth with the Wildcats holding a 7-3 lead.
Sulphur Springs sent 13 batters to plate, eight of them scored. The key shot in the big rally was a three-run homer over the left field fence by Anderson. Riley knocked in two runs and Seth Maeker plated a run with a ground out. Anderson came up for the second time in the inning and doubled but was unable to score as Sant struck out.
The Forney squad responded for two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wildcats closed out the game with two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. Forney scored four times in the sixth inning.
Sulphur Springs won by the 19-9 final.
The Sulphur Springs JV will play the SS freshmen in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
The next home game for the JV against a district opponent is Monday, March 16 vs. Pine Tree at 7 p.m. The SS ninth grade also plays Pine Tree at home March 16, with action beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The SS varsity team plays Thursday through Saturday in the Mesquite tournament.
