Winnsboro girls lose to Brock in playoffs

STEPHENVILLE — The dreams of another state girls basketball title for Winnsboro ended in the regional playoffs final.
Winnsboro has won three state titles in recent years under head coach Buddy Hawkins.
The Lady Raiders were the top ranked team Class 2A all year. They suffered an upset loss in a warm-up game to Bullard as their only defeat before they met Brock.
No. 8 Brock 41, No. 1 Winnsboro 39
Kenisha Harris led Brock with 23 points and 17 rebounds as the Lady Eagles upset Winnsboro.
Brock (30-8) advances to the state tournament in Austin and will play a semifinal game at either 8:30 or 10 a.m. Friday. The championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Winnsboro (36-2) was led by Opal Taskila's 17 points and six rebounds. Macy Morton added 10 points for the Lady Raiders. Others scoring for Winnsboro were Alex Langhoff (4), Amber Langhoff (3), Brea Draper (3) and Brittany Carter (2).
Defense was a key for both teams as Winnsboro shot 26.7 percent and Brock shot 30.6.
Kamy Cole was in double figures with 12 points for the Lady Eagles. Paige Parliament added 11 rebounds for Brock, which outrebounded the Lady Raiders, 43-29.
Taskila gave Winnsboro a 35-34 lead with a free throw at the 2:25 mark. That was the Lady Raiders' last lead.
Winnsboro got within 39-37 on a free throw by Amber Langhoff with 10 seconds showing, but Harris made two free throws with nine seconds on the clock for a 41-37 lead.
Taskila scored a bucket with one second showing for the final score of 41-39.
Winnsboro 58,  Peaster 48
In earlier action, Winnsboro  downed Peaster 58-48 in Class 2A Region III basketball quarterfinal playoffs. Lady Raiders Macy Morton and Opal Taskila each scored 14 points as Winnsboro advanced to the regional final.
No. 1 state-ranked Winnsboro (36-1) faced off with Brock, which defeated Hico in the other regional semifinal.
Brittany Carter added 12 points for Winnsboro. Amber Makeever led all scorers with 15 points for Peaster, which ended its season at 31-3.
