The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats got one top honor on the recently released District13-4A girls basketball team.
Reagan Humphrey was named as the Newcomer of the Year despite the Lady Cats disappointing year and finish in the standings.
The freshmen made an impression on coaches in the district with her play for the Lady Cats as she averaged 10 points and six rebounds a game in her first varsity season.
SS head girls basketball coach Tina Carrillo said, “I do think this was a fair representation of our team on all-district. I am proud of all the girls who got honors. Reagan is a definite bright spot in the program. There is a great future for Reagan if she will continue to pursue her dreams through hard work as she's doing now. There is a new sense of maturity with her; and her leadership is most definitely by her example. I noticed that she had begun to separate herself in practice by taking her level of competition to a new height. She even treated her wind sprints as a competition with herself. I think she naturally has a good balance with work ethic and self expectation. She applies the healthy kind of pressure on herself. She's fun to watch.”
The coach continued, “This is Mackenzie's third year in a row to receive first team all-district honors. She had also received the District Newcomer of the Year award her freshman year. I was hoping she could get a superlative this year, but as always, those awards are usually granted to those teams in the district who advance, so that's unfortunate. But she should be proud of herself to have received district honors every year. She had a great high school career and I'm very proud of her.”
Other all-district selections from Sulphur Springs were: Mackenzie Cross, first team; JaMonica Hall, Stevie Moore, second team.
Hall averaged six points and two rebounds a game; Moore pumped in seven points a game according to Carrillo.
